Theater Grottesco

Performers are Karen Light, Susan Skeele, Susie Perkins, Robin Duda, Myriah Duda, and long-time Grottesco member Danielle Reddick.
Under the guidance of Grottesco’s founder, John Flax.

DIFFERENT is two one-act plays: one is in the style of Greek Chorus, the other in Buffoon, the medieval world of Kings Fools and Hieronymus Bosch. Both acts unfold in a bold form of theatrical storytelling that most have never seen before.

DIFFERENT is two structured improvisations. The performers know the stories but have not memorized text or dialogue. Each story will be different at every performance. Who recounts each step of the stories, how the details are added, and how the powerful Grottesco physicality weaves it into something that might be considered a musical composition is something that can only be experienced live.

The first act, Chorus, recounts the three Betrayals of Joan of Arc, as imagined by sculptor Patrick Mehaffy. The second act, Buffoons, tells whacked versions of fairy tales as only buffoons can.

Daniel Piburn’s sound design and Skip Rappaport’s lighting design are two other players in the improvisations as they follow, support, sometimes lead and sometimes surprise the performers.

Strange and unexpected connections to our lives and times leap from the stage in daring bursts, as the Grottesco performers fly without the net of memorized text and rehearsed choreography.

Ensemble is at the heart of Grottesco’s work and the company has been consciously digging deeper into the depths of ensemble since February. In Grottesco’s world of physical theater, ensemble is where the actors create moving imagery, like a dynamic painting. They learn to know their fellow performers so well that the audience can witness the artistic equivalent of basketball’s no-look pass, an antidote for the age of individualism, and a reminder of the magical possibilities of working together and the possibilities of live theatre.
